Donation
On 1 January 2014, Ingvild Goetz donated 375 works of media art and the Sammlung Goetz exhibition building to the State of Bavaria. All other works in the collection, more than 5000 in total, were put on permanent loan to the Free State for an initial period of ten years. The Pinakothek der Moderne, the Haus der Kunst and the Neues Museum in Nuremberg were granted a preferential right to make use of the loans. In return, the State of Bavaria agreed to continue to present contemporary art in the building and to take on the employees. In addition to the preservation, care and presentation of the works, the now state-owned Sammlung Goetz continues to promote, grow and further develop the collection through acquisitions and commissions of new works. Ingvild Goetz remains connected to the institution in the context of her expertise as a collector.
The donation was first announced in September 2013, the year of the Sammlung Goetz’s 20th anniversary; the news was enthusiastically received by the public, cultural institutions, the press and politicians: “This is a unique opportunity for the State of Bavaria to secure the future of one of the most internationally recognized collections of contemporary art”, announced the then Prime Minister Horst Seehofer. “Bavaria’s role as a center for arts and culture is thus lastingly strengthened. The renowned Sammlung Goetz is an asset for the state’s art holdings, especially in the area of media art. It is one of the most important additions to artwork in Bavaria in recent decades”.
Ingvild Goetz remains an active and passionate collector of contemporary art. She continues to acquire works for the Sammlung Goetz and presents them as a donation or permanent loan to the beneficiary museums.
