Emotion. Young British and American Art from Sammlung Goetz

The exhibition Emotion presents characteristic works by 18 artists from the current art scene in Great Britain and the United States.

With Matthew Barney, Angela Bulloch, Willie Doherty, Tracey Emin, Robert Gober, Douglas Gordon, Mona Hatoum, Mike Kelley, Abigail Lane, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, Sarah Lucas, Cady Noland, Tony Oursler, Richard Prince, Sam Taylor-Wood, Rachel Whiteread and Andrea Zittel.

In the 1990s, a vital new art scene developed in London. Socio-political issues, sexuality and identity were dealt with in an emotional, rude and carefree manner. Similar to young American art, the roots of this lay in Pop and Concept Art. Its proximity to pop music, contemporary film and new media, however, was striking. The exhibition Emotion establishes a dialogue between these Anglo-Saxon art scenes with works in the Sammlung Goetz.

Approximately 160 works by nine British and nine American artists are on display. The show featured films, video and audio works as well as large-scale installations, sculptures and photographs. Due to two large exhibitions in Hamburg with Cindy Sherman and Jeff Wall, this exhibition does not include these artists although they are represented extensively in the Sammlung Goetz. The exhibition does not wish to emphasize national criteria, but point out the individual accomplishments of the individual artistic personalities.

Imi Knoebel

The Sammlung Goetz honors the artist Imi Knoebel on the occasion of his 80th birthday with a retrospective exhibition. The entire spectrum of Knoebel’s artistic oeuvre will be presented, starting with his black and white photographs from the 1960s to his collages made of multicolored paper and his objects cast in concrete and ending with his most recent paintings in acrylic on aluminum. The presentation also includes Knoebel’s geometrical, minimalist works as well as his expressive paintings from the 1980s, which have rarely been shown until now.

The American artist Barbara Kasten has created an impressive artistic oeuvre over her career spanning from the 1970s to the present. At the center of Kasten’s work are her abstract, geometric color photographs from the 1980s, which explore the interplay of light and dark and afford new spatial experiences. The Sammlung Goetz, which has extensive holdings of works by Kasten, is mounting the artist’s first solo exhibition in Europe in cooperation with the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg. A selection of the extensive retrospective will be on view in the Sammlung Goetz in Munich.
