    Opening Exhibition

    With the presentation of 14 artists in the newly constructed gallery building designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron, Sammlung Goetz gives a first glimpse of its extensive holdings.

    With Giovanni Anselmo, Alan Charlton, Helmut Federle, Michael Heizer, Imi Knoebel, Jannis Kounellis, Agnes Martin, Mario Merz, Bruce Nauman, Roman Opalka, Giulio Paolini, Michelangelo Pistoletto, David Rabanowitch, Ulrich Rückriem and Richard Serra.

    Ingvild Goetz's engagement to contemporary art began at the end of the 1960s and beginning of the 1970s: a time of socio-political upheavals and new artistic concepts. Her collecting activities developed in close connection with the exhibition programs of her gallery art in progress. The first presentations in the new gallery house built by Herzog & de Meuron reflect two facets of her passion for collection. In the basement, works by protagonists of Arte Povera can be seen: Giovanni Anselmo, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Giulio Paolini and Michelangelo Pistoletto. The upper floor and the stairwell, in contrast, are dominated by formally reduced abstract paintings and floor sculptures by Alan Charlton, Helmut Federle, Michael Heizer, Imi Knoebel, Agnes Martin, Bruce Nauman, Roman Opalka, David Rabanowitch, Ulrich Rückriem and Richard Serra.

    This presentation marks the start of regular exhibitions at Sammlung Goetz. In the future, the specially designed gallery building will present shows from Ingvild Goetz's extensive holdings that provide insights into her collecting activities. "For Munich", says Helmut Friedl, former Director of the City Gallery in Lenbachhaus, "this institution with its collection, which would be a treasure for any public collection, is a wonderful gain".

    The Sammlung Goetz honors the artist Imi Knoebel on the occasion of his 80th birthday with a retrospective exhibition. The entire spectrum of Knoebel’s artistic oeuvre will be presented, starting with his black and white photographs from the 1960s to his collages made of multicolored paper and his objects cast in concrete and ending with his most recent paintings in acrylic on aluminum. The presentation also includes Knoebel’s geometrical, minimalist works as well as his expressive paintings from the 1980s, which have rarely been shown until now.

    The American artist Barbara Kasten has created an impressive artistic oeuvre over her career spanning from the 1970s to the present. At the center of Kasten’s work are her abstract, geometric color photographs from the 1980s, which explore the interplay of light and dark and afford new spatial experiences. The Sammlung Goetz, which has extensive holdings of works by Kasten, is mounting the artist’s first solo exhibition in Europe in cooperation with the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg. A selection of the extensive retrospective will be on view in the Sammlung Goetz in Munich.
