The renovation of the exhibition building
The Sammlung Goetz exhibition building, designed in 1989/90, is an early work of the architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. Since its inauguration in 1993, the structure has attracted people interested in architecture from around the world. With its clear, reserved design, its sophisticated floor plan and its uniform lighting, the building served as the model for many subsequent Herzog & de Meuron museum structures and made the Swiss architects world famous. The Sammlung Goetz exhibition building has long since become an icon of modern architecture.
After more than 25 years and over 50 exhibitions, extensive renovation work on the building is now underway. The wooden elements on the facade were renovated in 2018; the exterior glass elements and the building’s technical equipment will be refurbished or renewed, and its fire protection equipment modernized. If all work is carried out as planned, the Sammlung Goetz will reopen at the end of 2021. Until then, the building and the sculpture garden, unfortunately, must remain closed to visitors.
The video on our website provides a good impression of the exhibition building, as well as additional information on the building’s architecture and highlights of the collection. A selection of the Sammlung Goetz, which includes more than 5000 works, will continue to be available for viewing worldwide through exhibitions at other institutions and through our works on loan.
