STAY INSPIRED with Zilla Leutenegger

A conversation between the Sammlung Goetz and the artist about daily motivation and inspiration

What is your daily motivation, Zilla Leutenegger?

I have always enjoyed working - especially in the crises. My daily routine is my motivation. It also keeps me distracted, which is important.

Where do you get your inspiration in these times?

Even though a lot has changed around us, I remain calm while working – of course I have to adjust my working hours and certain procedures.

In terms of content, one work has emerged from this crisis: the NZZ works.

Therein, I react with movement studies of a woman (Zilla), in which I make monotypes, on the current daily newspapers (Neue Zürcher Zeitung / NZZ). I started this work on March 17, 2020 – first week of the lockdown in Switzerland.

So you could say that this time also inspires me.

What are you working on right now?

I am preparing my exhibition Espèces d'espaces at the Graubünden Art Museum – and working on my book ZILLAGORILLA, which will be published in the middle of the year. Then, if everything works out, I will further develop my exhibition in Milan. This exhibition has been postponed until September. Towards the end of February, we’ve also reopened the new branch with the exhibition MEZZANIN on Rämistrasse in Zurich – in Peter Kilchmann's new gallery space. There you can see many new works, like the bronze cats, the above mentioned monotypes on the NZZ or the mirror bars.

P.S.: At the moment we are also dealing a lot with the logistics of exhibitions, that have to be postponed, and the storage of the already produced artworks.
