    They say that the best stories are written by life itself. But how much more exciting it is to go beyond the limits of reality and follow protagonists into a fictional world of images. The exhibition Creating Realities in the Pinakothek der Moderne and the Museum Brandhorst unites 17 works of media art that open the viewer up to spaces that lie beyond those of everyday experiences.

    With Ed Atkins, Keren Cytter, Brice Dellsperger, Omer Fast, Yang Fudong, John Gerrard, Camille Henrot, Pierre Huyghe, Sven Johne, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Jesper Just, Philipp Lachenmann, Bjørn Melhus, Clement Page, Ryan Trecartin, Ulla von Brandenburg and Andro Wekua.

    The donation of 375 video works from the Sammlung Goetz to the Free State of Bavaria in 2014 seals a gap in the Bavarian museum landscape while simultaneously continuing Munich’s long-standing tradition as a film and media hub in Germany. The endowment now provides a variety of opportunities for future displays in the area of video and new-media art. Last year saw the launch of the art-film festival KINO DER KUNST, which garnered international attention from the moment the lights dimmed for its very first screening. KINO DER KUNST is about to be held for the second time, with events taking place from 22 April to 26 April 2015.
    The Goetz endowment and the upcoming festival now provide the perfect opportunity for a comprehensive exhibition of video works at both the Pinakothek der Moderne and Museum Brandhorst. The exhibition Creating Realities – Encounters between Art and Cinema takes a closer look at fictional narration in contemporary new-media and video art and also draws from the theme of this year’s KINO DER KUNST festival.

    On show are works by 17 video artists who were born in the decades from the 1960s to the 1980s. This generation of artists uses new media art to explore the reception and reflection of narrative cinema. The curators have selected some films and multi-channel video installations with a fictional character and innovative narrative structure. What they all share is a hermetically sealed, immersive visual world, as well as an outlook that is lyrical or utopian.

    The Sammlung Goetz honors the artist Imi Knoebel on the occasion of his 80th birthday with a retrospective exhibition. The entire spectrum of Knoebel’s artistic oeuvre will be presented, starting with his black and white photographs from the 1960s to his collages made of multicolored paper and his objects cast in concrete and ending with his most recent paintings in acrylic on aluminum. The presentation also includes Knoebel’s geometrical, minimalist works as well as his expressive paintings from the 1980s, which have rarely been shown until now.

    The American artist Barbara Kasten has created an impressive artistic oeuvre over her career spanning from the 1970s to the present. At the center of Kasten’s work are her abstract, geometric color photographs from the 1980s, which explore the interplay of light and dark and afford new spatial experiences. The Sammlung Goetz, which has extensive holdings of works by Kasten, is mounting the artist’s first solo exhibition in Europe in cooperation with the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg. A selection of the extensive retrospective will be on view in the Sammlung Goetz in Munich.
